"It would be amazing if everyone could start supporting each other no matter what" - Mayah Herlihy

Welcome to this week's interview with the amazing Mayah Herlihy! We talked about her debut single 'On My Way' which reached number one in the UK Country Charts as well as her songwriting process and the artists that she is most excited about right now!

Let's jump into it...

Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with me Mayah! I loved your debut single ‘On My Way’ can you tell me about the inspiration behind the song and how it came to be?

I first wrote ‘On My Way’ at the start of the first lockdown as I was going through quite a tough time and considered giving up my music and basically giving up on my dream since I was a little girl. But after having a long hard talk to myself I realised I didn’t want to give up and decided to work harder than ever so the inspiration is me "on my way" to where I want to be and what I want to achieve.

I would love to learn about your songwriting process, do you have a specific way that you go about writing?

Personally I write my songs about experiences or events I’ve been through in my life and since I started writing that way I’ve learnt even though it might have a personal meaning to me others can relate to it too.

I understand that you recently were Number One in the UK Country Charts with ‘On My Way’ which is incredible! How did that feel?

It was so overwhelming I never expected it do as well as it did the support I received was absolutely amazing and I’m so grateful for everyone that has supported me throughout this incredible journey.

Is there a way that you think that as a society and a community that we can work towards creating a more equal and diverse environment within the Scottish music industries?

I think it would be amazing if everyone could start supporting each other no matter what as it really gives you more confidence that you are getting somewhere with your music career if you have supporters that will always be there.

Is there a moment within your career so far that you would say was your most rewarding experience or something that you are significantly proud of out of all your achievements?

As a musician I am actually very proud of myself for having the guts to put myself out there into the world for everyone to see because growing up I was very shy. I still am at times so I am really glad I found the confidence to release music.

Your next single ‘Follow the Sunshine’ will be out on the 26th of March which we can’t wait for! What else can we look forward to from you in 2021?

I will definitely be releasing more music in the near future and hopefully when gigs get back to normal I’ll get booked for more festivals and gigs.

Lastly, I was wondering what female or non-binary Scottish artists are you most excited about right now?

I am really excited and inspired by females like Jodi at SILVI. She’s amazing! I’m really looking forward to hearing new music from them. I also love Sasha Kaloheris. Her songwriting is incredible and her vocals are outstanding. I’m also really excited by Robyn Red who is at a young age like me. Her vocal range is amazing. So many more females have really inspired me throughout my musical journey and I’m looking forward to watching their musical careers progress too!

There you have it!

Thanks so much to Mayah for answering all of my burning questions! Make sure to go and check Mayah out!
